Vienna Horns of Scotland

About Us

Vienna Horns of Scotland were founded in the summer of 2007 by Marshall Halliday, Norman Macdougall and Martin Prowse, with the following aims:

  • To promote the playing and understanding of the special qualities of the Vienna horn in Scotland and elsewhere through the organisation of workshops and public performances
  • To forge closer links with groups specifically dedicated to the Vienna horn, above all the Wiener Waldhorn Verein (Vienna Horn Club of Vienna), founded in 1883 and the oldest horn club in the world
  • To invite Vienna horn specialists to direct workshops and concerts
  • To invite those interested in the Vienna horn to participate in workshops and concerts, drawing mainly, though not necessarily exclusively, on our friends in the British Horn Society and International Horn Society
  • To promote cultural exchange between Scotland and Austria through events located in both countries

We play horns by:

  • Leopold Uhlmann
  • Anton Dehmal and Anton Dehmals Nachfolger
  • Erste Wiener Productiv Genossenschaft der Musik-Instrumentenmacher
  • Hermann Ganter
  • Robert Engel (Vienna horn and bass horn)
  • Haagston
  • Andreas Jungwirth

Over the years, we have been fortunate to work with distinguished professional Vienna horn players from Vienna, Munich and England.

Since the foundation of VHOS in 2007, we have forged a close and harmonious relationship with Professor Franz Söllner, formerly 3rd horn, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, who has conducted at all VHOS events.
